Electrified Fence
The purpose of the electrified fence is to provide a security system around the perimeter
of a correctional facility that will deter attempted escapes, alarm if there is one, and stop
the individual prior to actually getting loose, which may endanger local residents and be
an embarrassment to the institution. It does this in three ways.

First, it acts as a physiological barrier. Inmates will think long and hard before they would
even consider approaching a lethal fence. So an attempt is stopped before it even
begins.

Second, the electrified fence acts as a physical barrier, which will slow down attempted
escapes until action can be taken to foil the assault. With an electrified fence it takes
time to cut wires, prevent alarms and not get electrocuted, so it gives staff time to
discover the problem before an escape can take place.

Third, but not least, the electrified fence is a positive alarm system. It the fence is
breached for any reason it will go into alarm to notify staff of a problem.

In a typical installation, the perimeter has two standard fences with barb tape at the top.
Between these fences is placed the electrified fence. The fence consists of high voltage
wires supported by insulators connected to the posts approximately 20 feet apart.
